Description
Oxalis triangularis, also known as the Purple Shamrock or False Shamrock, is an exciting addition to any home. Native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil, this beautiful rhizomatous perennial is a statement plant that will catch the eye of visitors with its unique triangular-shaped leaves featuring three heart-shaped leaflets.
When it comes to caring for your Oxalis triangularis, it prefers bright indirect light but can also happily thrive in partial shade with careful watering. It should be planted in a well-draining mix that’s high in organic matter and topped up but not over-watered. To prevent root rot, make sure that the soil is allowed to dry out slightly between waterings. Fertilizing your Oxalis can be done sparingly as it doesn’t require much additional nutrition.
One of the most interesting features of this plant is its little foliage trick – during the night, its leaves will close up and then re-open again when daylight returns. Make sure you don’t throw away your Oxalis if you noticed that there’s been a decline in its health – twice a year or more times, this plant goes into dormancy during which its leaves die back – just stop all watering activity and wait for new growth before reactivating appropriate care regiment. Move your beloved shamrock back to a nicely lit spot where it can continue growing and flourishing!
