How to Keep Your Blooms Fresh and Fabulous All Season Long
There’s nothing quite like a fresh bouquet of summer flowers. Whether you’ve picked them from your garden, bought them at a florist or market, or received a surprise delivery, summer blooms bring colour, fragrance, and joy into any space. But with warmer temperatures and stronger sunlight, they also need a bit of extra care to stay vibrant.
Here are our top summer floral tips to help your arrangements stay fresh, full, and fabulous throughout the season.
Choose Heat-Resilient Flowers
Not all flowers are created equal in summer heat. When designing your summer arrangements, opt for blooms that naturally thrive in warmer temperatures. These include:
Sunflowers – Bold, cheerful, and long-lasting
Zinnias – Available in bright, eye-catching colors
Santini Chrysanths – Hardy and vibrant with a strong summer vibe
Allium – Perfect for wild, natural arrangements
Dahlias – A showstopper that loves the sun with proper hydration
If you're buying a pre-made bouquet, ask your florist for summer-friendly blooms or seasonal varieties.
Hydration Is Key
Just like us, flowers get thirsty in the heat! Refresh their water daily if needed and make sure the vase is clean to avoid bacterial growth. Make sure you use the flower food that came with your bouquet to give your blooms an extra energy boost.
Pro tip: Keep a small spray bottle nearby to mist your arrangement lightly, especially if it's in a warm room or near a window.
Keep Them Cool (ish)
Sunlight is beautiful but can be a flower’s enemy indoors. Keep arrangements out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources like radiators or electronics.
If you’re entertaining outdoors, set your arrangement out just before guests arrive and bring it inside afterward to protect it from prolonged heat exposure.
Trim, Tidy & Rotate
Every few days, trim the stems by about 1–2 cm at an angle to help the flowers absorb more water. Remove any leaves below the waterline to prevent rot. Rotate your arrangement occasionally to give all sides equal light and air exposure.
Clean Your Vases
This often-overlooked tip makes a big difference! Before reusing a vase, wash it thoroughly with warm soapy water and a splash of vinegar to remove any residue or bacteria from previous arrangements (Check out my most popular Instagram reel to date to see how clean my vases are!)
Bonus Tip: Style with Seasonal Flair
Use herbs like mint, basil, or rosemary to add texture and scent. Try pairing vibrant summer blooms with fresh greenery, or weave in local wildflowers for a natural, effortless look.
